How to Change Your Life
4. Beyond Agendas

I am that I am!
Master John, of Magical Service. And this is lesson four of How to Change Your Life.
Ahh…
We’ve asked John to include our previous messages, The Roots of the Pain and The Tree of Life, as part of this class, because they are so very important to what we are talking about.
Mmm…
So, we’ve talked about power. We’ve talked about how almost everything humans do is about pushing things around, about using power to get through life. And we’ve talked about what that does to you and to your body.
Then we talked about the metaphorical Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and how this tree—or rather, how eating the fruit from this tree, or, you could say, just simply choosing to know good and evil—how it has destroyed your body over and over and over again. Because, you see, the knowledge of good and evil is all about power.
It’s not about some grand goodness and some grand evil. Those are just perspectives, and they are different for every single being in creation. No, the truth is that—hm, John is trying to find the right words here.
The truth is that most people, oh, they look around in the world and they see the people who have power over them, and who use that power, and they see them as evil. And they long to have power over those people. They think that would be good, and it’s all about power. It’s all about manipulating reality.
You could also call this tree, The Tree of Agendas.
Hmm…
Let that in for a moment.
The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil can also be called The Tree of Human Agendas.
Well, let’s just call it The Tree of Agendas, because it’s not limited just to humans.
You see, from the very beginning, from the very first disagreement you ever had with someone, it was over your agendas. You had an agenda to accomplish something, and that conflicted with somebody else’s agenda to accomplish something else, or to keep you from accomplishing what you wanted, because they wanted something different.
And you believed, because of the way this mass-consciousness, and in particular this Earth experience, was set up, you believed that your agendas were mutually exclusive. And so, well, in your opinion that person became evil because they were fighting for their agenda against you. Ha! But you were fighting for your agenda against them, and even though it seemed like it was so much better to you, to them it made you look evil.
Hmm…
The Tree of Agendas. That is precisely what has kept you away from the Tree of Life, which we now understand can also be called your light body.
Your agendas. That’s what keeps your body struggling. That’s what keeps you in pain. That’s what keeps your light body from fully integrating. Oh, not because it’s not here already. It is. It’s already here! But your agendas keep you distracted from it. You are not letting it in, because of your agendas.
Mmm…
Oh, the human goes, “Well, what am I supposed to do, just give up? Give in to all these other people? Let go of any desires, or of wanting anything?”
No, you’re missing the point.
Giving in to someone else’s agenda is just the other side of the power game. You can’t find enough power to overcome them, so you give up. You give your power over to them and let them have power over you. You’re not strong enough to manipulate them, so you let them manipulate you. Well, that’s just the other side of the game. It’s just an agenda in reverse, you could say. (John is rolling his eyes a little bit at that, but it’s true.)
No, what you need is The Tree of Life.
Letting go of your agendas is not the same as giving up.
Mmm…
An inspiration comes to do something, and then you start doing it and you find that it conflicts with someone else’s agenda. Do you just give up and let them have their way, or do you power over them and have your way anyway?
Well, it’s a false question. It’s a false choice, because there is another way.
You see, you are both sovereign creators. You can have your way and they can have their way too, but in order for that to happen you have to step back. You have to take a deep breath. You have to open up to your Divine Wisdom.
Oh, you can call it your soul, you can call it your divinity, or whatever you want. But it’s your wisdom. It is the wisdom collected from every single experience you have ever had on Earth, in any lifetime, or anywhere else.
You see, you have answered that question: Who am I?
If you hadn’t, you wouldn’t be here right now. You would not have purchased this class. But you have. Even if you don’t think you have, you actually have. It’s within you: I am that I am!
Oh, the mind goes, “What does that mean?”
Stop thinking, mind. Stop trying to figure it out. Just feel.
Oh, it’s way deeper than any words can possibly describe, but you have it. It’s a knowing that is within you.
And that knowing, that wisdom, is here now. It’s available to you. It’s here to serve you. It’s here to bring the solution to every problem in your life. And that wisdom, the wisdom of your soul, it knows how to solve these issues in a way where everybody wins.
Oh, we don’t like that word so much, because it’s full of power. But we don’t have a lot of better words, and you know what we mean: where everybody gets what they actually want.
Mmm…
You might think, at the human level, that it looks like these problems are insurmountable. What you want is so opposite of what that other person wants that it seems impossible there could ever be a solution. But there is. There is always a solution.
Because, you see, there cannot be a problem or a question where the answer is not already there, or the solution is not already created in some dimension. It is simply a matter of allowing it to come in. Your wisdom knows where it is, and it knows how to get to it.
Mmm…
But, as long as you are trying to solve it from the human level, as long as you are trying to apply power, the wisdom sits back and watches. Your soul smiles, because it knows that some new wisdom going to come out of this adventure. It lets you do your best, and it eventually picks up the pieces when you fall on your face or when everything blows up around you. Because, you see, the real solution to these problems is not available at the human level.
Hmm…
Oh, let’s say that a little different. The real solution to these issues will not be found in the human mind, because it is not there. Your soul’s wisdom is not in your mind.
Your human mind will recognize it when it sees it, and it will go, “Oh my, how did that happen? Where did that idea come from?”
And you’ll know: Dear mind, that is our wisdom. And if you’ll just stop working so hard at trying to figure everything out, you will see more and more of it.
Mmm…
John was part of a group years and years ago, a spiritual group in New Mexico called The Celebration. It was kind of like a church, but they didn’t like to call it a church because, well, it wasn’t about worshiping God. It was about celebrating life and coming together in consciousness.
They didn’t have a minister like most churches. Instead, it was run by volunteers. They had a council meeting once a month and anybody could come who wanted to, and decisions had to be made by consensus, which meant everybody at the meeting had to agree. Oh, you’d think that would be impossible, and very often it was.
But in the beginning this group had based its governance on the writings of a very enlightened being, or a very conscious being at least, a Dr. M. Scott Peck and his book The Different Drum, on community building and peacemaking. A beautiful book!
Oh, it had its limitations, as they discovered. But the idea was that at the council meeting, the meeting wasn’t really about making decisions. It was about going deep into community. They didn’t really understand yet what that meant. It was really about going deep into communion with self. It was about taking these problems to wisdom, to Soul’s wisdom, and sometimes it happened.
Sometimes they would have a particularly thorny problem to resolve, with different people wanting different things, seemingly completely at odds with each other, and they would argue. They would almost come to blows sometimes, they’d get so frustrated!
Sometimes a meeting would become so heated that someone would call for silence, and ask people to just stop, to just be still for a few minutes. Fortunately, these people mostly understood about that, about why it was important, so they would do that. They would just stop. Everybody in the room would become silent and look inside themselves.
Oh, John gets emotional just remembering some of those meetings.
They would get silent, and so often after a little bit of silence—it didn’t happen every time, but it happened often that after a bit of silence, a bit of stillness—it’s not just about being silent, it’s about stillness. About going still inside.
After a bit of that, someone would speak up. And they would say, “What if we did this?” And it would be an idea that seemed to come from nowhere and resolved everything. Or at least, it was a beginning. It made everybody think different and open to a new possibility.
Then someone else would say, “Oh! Yes, and what if we do this?”
And somebody else would say, “And we could do that!” And in no time at all a new solution would be agreed to and implemented that gave everybody what they wanted most, and people would walk out of that meeting shaking their heads in awe. They felt like they had been touched by divinity. They felt like somehow heaven had opened and touched them with grace and magic. It was such an incredible feeling after one of those experiences! And they happened often, especially in the beginning years of this group.
Mmm…
So you see, dear friend, there is always a solution. It already exists, but it just hasn’t been brought in yet. To get it, you have to get still.
Hmm…
If you’re dealing with other people, they often have no concept of stillness or anything similar. You can’t rely on them for finding that place within a meeting. It’s probably not going to happen. But it doesn’t need to, because you are the creator of your life.
When you go still inside instead of spending so much energy trying to push life around, trying to manipulate life, trying to figure out the solution at the human level, you turn it over to your soul’s wisdom.
Oh, your soul isn’t going to do it for you. Your soul isn’t going to solve the problem for you. But when you take the problem to your soul’s wisdom, you will discover the solution. You won’t figure it out, you won’t find it by searching for it. You will simply discover it, in the stillness.
You will discover it in Rumi’s field, out beyond all ideas of rightdoing and wrongdoing. Oh, in that field, Rumi said, it is so full that you can’t even talk about it.
In that field, out beyond human agendas, oh, it is so still. And in that field is the solution to every problem that could possibly exist, and it will find you at exactly the right moment. If you are willing to enter into that field, out beyond agendas. Out beyond ideas of how things should be.
That’s where the tree of life is. It’s where your light body is. It’s where the life you’ve always dreamed of is, and so much more. In that field, out beyond human agenda, or any agenda, or any idea of how things should be or how they shouldn’t be.
Mmm…
Oh, the human struggles with that. The mind struggles with that. It doesn’t know what to do with that. It doesn’t know how to even think about life without thinking about how it should be and how it shouldn’t be, without coming up with its plans and its goals and its agendas. It thinks, “Are you telling me that I can’t like anything anymore, or dislike anything anymore?”
No, we’re not telling you that at all. That’s missing the point.
You know what you like. You know what you don’t like. The problem is that you turn those into agendas, and you spend your life and your energy protecting yourself from the things you don’t like.
Oh, you spend a small amount of that energy trying to create what you think you like, but most of your energy goes into protecting yourself from what you don’t like. And as long as you’re doing that, it keeps you distracted from this field, from this tree of life. It keeps you distracted from your light body, and it keeps you stuck in this human experience.
Instead, just enjoy what you like. Allow the experience, even if you don’t like it. Just feel it!
Like and don’t like is a judgment. It’s a total judgment!
Hmm…
John had an experience long ago, in his teens. He grew up liking almost everything, as far as food goes. There were only a few things that he didn’t like. And oh, he remembers how he’s always loved mayonnaise on his vegetables. That’s how his mom got him to eat vegetables. She put some mayonnaise on them, and he loved it. Only it was homemade mayonnaise, made from soybeans because they were vegan.
Well, when he was eighteen he went off to work in the woods with his uncle. His aunt did the cooking, and they didn’t have homemade mayonnaise. They had real mayonnaise that had vinegar in it, and he hated it, but he also hated eating those vegetables without mayonnaise on them.
Ha! He’s a little embarrassed about this story, but that’s okay. It illustrates a point, something he learned when he was eighteen years old.
He got so frustrated with not having mayonnaise, and out in the woods there was no way to make the kind he liked, so one day he thought, “What if I open my mind a little bit and try this other kind of mayonnaise?” And he tried it. He noticed a little reaction, and then he realized something about it.
He realized that there was nothing good or bad about the flavor. It was just a flavor, and it was up to him whether he judged it good or bad. Ha! Well, he liked the flavor of mayonnaise on his vegetables so much that he quickly changed his perception of the little bit of vinegar flavor in this new kind of mayonnaise. And next thing he knew, he liked it!
Oh, he’s done that with other things in life. There weren’t very many things that he didn’t like, and with most of them, a point came in his life where he just realized, “Why am I making a big deal about this particular flavor?” And so he opened up to it. He felt into it. He tasted it, instead of reacting.
You see, most people taste a flavor that they think they don’t like, or they have an experience in their life that they don’t like, and instead of actually tasting it, or feeling it, they react to it. And then they use power to try to push it away, and they end up frustrated.
So instead, if there’s a flavor that you don’t like, that’s fine. You don’t have to change that. But what if you did? What if next time you experience that flavor, you just take a moment and actually taste it?
Allow the experience of the taste in your mouth, and you’ll find yourself having a whole different relationship with whatever it is. Because now it’s just an experience. It’s neither good nor bad, it’s just an experience. And you might even discover, as John has with some of those things, that you actually like it!
John used to hate coffee. There was no coffee in his home when he was growing up, and in later years he would taste it sometimes and it tasted awful to him. Then, about four and a half years ago, everything was changing in his life and he was feeling frustrated because sometimes he just wanted something to drink that tasted good and wasn’t sweet. One day he thought about this thing about taste and he thought, “Maybe I should give coffee another try.” And this time, he took the time to actually taste it.
And his experience of it changed, because he wasn’t reacting to it anymore. It was no longer negative. It was just an experience, and he found that if he added a little bit of stevia and a little bit of cream, it tasted pretty darn good! And it became a great love in his life.
Hmm…
So, what’s our point with all of this? Our point is that when you let go of your agendas, when you stop, when you become still, when you actually feel into the experience, whatever experience you’re having, you are going to discover something new. If you react to it like most people do, like you have for most of your life, well you’re going to struggle with it.
Some experiences are going to be amazing, and some are going to be amazingly horrible. But instead of reacting, you can stop, take a breath, and be still. Allow the experience.
Oh, being still can be in the middle of running for your life, if that’s what’s necessary. You can still find the stillness inside of you in that situation, and that will open you up to an entirely different experience. It will open you up to the knowing of your wisdom, so that in the moment, you will know exactly what to do.
Oh, the knowing is not about the future. Well, sometimes it says, “Hey, you need to think about this potential for the future,” or “You need to buy an airplane ticket,” or whatever it is.
It’s about NOW. Your knowing is about NOW. It’s about what to do NOW.
That doesn’t mean it’ll never have you think about the future, but it will never have you trying to figure it out. It’ll just bring an idea that says, “Hey, open to this possibility. Consider it.” It might or might not come to be, that possibility. But in the opening to it, you open yourself up to other potentials, and your life changes in ways that you cannot even imagine and you certainly can’t plan for.
So, in the stillness there is always a solution. In the moment, for the moment. Always.
You might not be able to see right now how this particular inspiration, or this particular knowing, how it has anything to do with that problem you see in your near future. But it does, if you trust it. If you turn that problem over to your wisdom and come back to the stillness. If you come back to this field out beyond agendas and agreements and disagreements and rightdoing and wrongdoing.
Come back to the field, this beautiful, amazing field, and you will know in that moment what to do. And that problem you see in the future, it will take care of itself.
Oh, we’ve said that often, and the human mind almost always goes, “But I have to do something!”
No, dear mind. All you need to do is come back to this field.
You can ask John. So many times in his life he’s felt a problem looming, and he chose to just let it take care of itself. And it did!
Oh, he ended up doing things, but they were things that the inspiration for came in the moment, and they didn’t have anything to do with solving that problem. And yet in the process of doing them, the problem became solved.
So dear mind, your job now is to rest. To rest in this amazing field, this stillness.
Hmm…
So, how do you change your life?
Dear friend, you release your agendas about what that looks like, or what it should look like. You come back to Rumi’s field, to your own tree of life, out beyond any ideas of how things should be. And you rest there. And you live there.
Oh, ha! You’re not going to spend a lot of time laying around in bed. You might spend some, because your body needs the rest. But when that wisdom starts coming in, when you open up to it, when you release all the ideas about what it should be, oh, you’re going to find yourself quite busy!
Because the knowing is going to come in. In each moment you’re going to have a new inspiration, a new idea that says, “Oh, that would be fun! Let’s do this! Let’s go do that! Let’s call this person!” or whatever it is you need to do. You’ll find yourself working on paperwork that you were dreading doing, cleaning house, or all those other things that you thought you had to push yourself to do. They’ll just happen!
You’ll just find yourself doing them, or you’ll find they are already taken care of. The house cleaned itself. Somebody else took care of something. The ways things can work out are infinite, and they are already created, dear friend!
Oh, a common misunderstanding among humans who have woken up is that they have to do something to create the life they want.
No, dear friend. It is already created! It already exists!
Your soul saw what you liked, and it already imagined it. It’s already there! You just haven’t stopped long enough to receive it.
Because as long as you are pushing things around with power, there is no room for these creations to come in. And even when they try to come in, that power comes back around and smashes them to pieces, even as it breaks your body down.
Mmm…
So, find the stillness inside of you.
And that doesn’t mean just laying on your bed, or stopping all the thoughts in your mind. Those are just more power games.
No, take a deep breath.
Let go of the agendas.
Don’t give up, this is not about giving anything up except your agenda.
This is about opening up. Opening up to the possibility of you getting even better than what you thought you wanted, and of the others getting what they really wanted too.
Your mind will never, ever figure that out, or find a way to make it happen. But your wisdom already knows, and it’s already here for you. But it’s only available in Rumi’s field, out beyond all ideas of right doing and wrongdoing and all ideas of how things should be or how they shouldn’t be.
It’s not about giving in to what you don’t want. It is about opening up to something even grander than what you have yet imagined.
Mmm…
So, take that in, dear friend.
Spend some time with this message. Listen to it again if you feel like it, but take some time with it before you go on to the next one. At least a few hours, preferably at least a day.
And we’ll see you in our next session.
And so it is.
